Trafford MV u13's v Eccles u13's
By Greg Hawkins
After 2 hard fought Lancashire cup matches, TMV u13’s returned to regular action welcoming old adversaries, Eccles, to MacPherson Park.
We’ve played Eccles every year and have a winning record. But when Eccles arrived a man short, you could smell complacency dripping into the TMV boys. Eccles missing boys due to injuries and rugby league commitments. But firstly a big thanks to Mike, Joe Barker, Charlie Valentine, Dan Armitage and Stan for playing stints for the visitors to ensure a competitive match.
So. We set up to receive the kick off - confident of an easy win.
But the boys didn’t count on Eccles. A team that were well coached, had some excellent individuals, good basics and were a real team.
Throughout the first half Eccles bossed the scrum and were first to the breakdown. They were busting tackles with MV leaving much of the defence work to Joe, Andrew, Dan C and Dewi. On his return after injury Dewi also made sure we hit half time ahead with two great scores - one a lovely step inside from 5 metres, the other a lung busting run half the length of the pitch.
In the second half it was clear the smaller squad was tiring the Eccles boys. But they never gave up and continued to play positive, attacking rugby. But the TMV backline also started to find it’s rhythm leading to 3 tries from Buckley. One a superb, full width passing move and the others a mixture of good play and natural ability.
The final result was 30 - 20 to TMV but both teams and clubs should be very proud.
So. Another action packed morning. A win. But not to the levels of the previous 3 games. We have a talented squad and it is a pleasure to see these lads continue to develop. And hopefully by our next match in 2 weeks time, John Valentine will have recovered from his hangover.
