Rossendale U13's 5 Trafford MV U13's 45
By Greg Hawkins
Sunday saw TMV under 13s make the journey to the Lancashire hills to face Rossendale while Smudge took the scenic route via Bradford!
With injuries and half term we had to travel with 12 and ask a couple of the boys to play out of position. All took it on the chin showing the real strength of this team. Further injuries to Rossendale meant we had to finish the game 10 a side and 3 man scrums and the changes did take a toll on our continuity.
Rossendale were a great set of lads. Well coached and refereed but it would be fair to say their development is a little behind ours but clearly have a group of game and committed boys with a great attitude.
MV started strongly and were moving the ball well from the start and quickly creating try scoring opportunities. Although we did manage to waste 3 over the line!!!
With a great performance from Valentine, Paddy was able to control the game from 10 and Dewi was masterful in defence and attack at full back which is not his natural position.
Ably assisted by his wingers, Keays and Barker, he was always a threat and provided real leadership on the field.
Our forwards’ loose play was much improved with and although we struggled in the scrum, Smudge & Stan put in a real shift with James Milnes having his game of the season - a guy that’s really improving week by week. And Archie and Jackson provided muscle and real go forward.
Whilst we spent much of the game on the attack, the defensive effort on our line from Beales and O’Shea was immense.
We ran out winners 9 tries to 1 with a mix of strong straight runs, some good fluid passing and some great solo efforts. The try scorers were O’Shea (3), Valentine, Barker, Mowe, Milnes, Beales and Archie.
A good win but we need to keep our feet on the ground. We will have much tougher games on the horizon. We can’t choose to duck tackles, we need to tackle low, work a bit harder at the rucks and make sure our passing game continues to develop to make the most of our wing wizardry.
And lastly a big thanks to the parents. Those who travelled today and those who support the boys every week. They are a cracking bunch of lads, really developing individually and as a team. But we couldn’t do it without your support and commitment.
