A super late try from Jamie Kingdon gave MV the points in this tightly contested game on a heavy MV pitch

Heavy overnight rain made conditions difficult for both sides on Saturday at MV's MacPherson Park as Wigton travelled in from Cumbria. A wet muddy pitch made it hard work for both packs and the running backs form either side were unable to get into their stride. Having said that both sides fought hard for possession and position and the watching crowd were kept enthralled until the final whistle.

Wigton were first to get into their stride and heavy pressure from the opening whistle brought an early try for the visiting side as Dan Cozens crashed over wide on the left, the conversion was missed by Dan Read 0-5. The early head of steam kept boiling and MV were unable to get out of their own half. The continued onslaught eventually saw Steve Harris get a touchdown close to the left of the uprights making the conversion a formality this time for Read 0-12. It was imperative that MV got a foothold in the game and this they did as hard tackling and good loose play limited the Wigton effect on the game. Pat Eccles and Stuart Crampton kicked wisely for MV putting the ball deep into the Wigton half and forcing a slow clearance. For a good half hour MV stifled any further influence Wigton could make on the game and the much fancied 3rd placed Wigton had to settle for a half time lead of 0-12.

MV are a team full of grit and character and were up for the fight as the second half kicked off. The teams swapped early exchanges and it was midway through the half that MV finally made an impact. Young local lad hooker Kieran Lally smashed through the defensive line after some great handling from the home side and with the kick close to the sticks Pat Eccles slotted the conversion over to be right back in the game at 7-12. MV's Jamie Kingdon was having a good game and as the play broke down the right flank it was Kingdon on hand wide on the right to follow up a goof kickand chase and get the touchdown. Eccles again converted to take the lead 14-12. The lead was short lived as Read kicked a penalty for Wigton 14-15. As time was running out MV were pressing continually and it was Jamie Kingdon once again that made the difference. MV went through several phases of play and then it was Kingdon that took a short hard pass from Pat Eccles at full pace, his size and speed combined were too much for the defending tacklers who were shrugged off as he bulldozed over the line. Pat Eccles capped a good day all round as he converted to close off the game in MV's favour 21-15.

This was a result full of spirirt by MV but does not detract from the hard work that the team still has to do to become a top 4 side in North Lancs / Cumbria Rugby. MV has now consolidated 9th position and are level on point swith 8th placed Fleetwood. This coming weekend MV are again at home, to Alwinians, who are placed just below in 10th position. MV are calling on local Rugby supporters to get behind the local town teams whilst the 6 Nations are on and give the local Clubs a boost. Kick off is at 2.15pm
