MV open League Campaign with Strong Win over Aldwinians 34-15

MV put in a good first half performance which laid the platform for captain Andy Quigley and Coach Richard Phiilips to claim MV's first win of the season. Man of the Match was James Matthie

After heavy morning rain the elements changed in favour of the spectators at MacPherson Park on Saturday afternoon as Trafford MV opened their account in the newly formed ADM Lancashire Premier League with a good home win over Aldwinians. As the game kicked off the crowd was still arriving as early Aldwinians pressure took play deep into the MV danger area. Strong driving from a big visiting pack saw MV struggle to contain play and the ball was driven over the MV line in tight play for an early opening score 0-5. Over recent seasons it was often a single score which separated the teams but MV have worked hard through the Summer and were not ruffled. MV came back strongly and won good kick off ball good handling and strong driving play drew the defence in close which enabled Jamie Kingdon to find space on the left wing to cruise over, conversion missed, MV were level 5-5. Despite struggling up front against a big scrum MV were winning ball in all other phases and playing well. MV struck again when scrum half Pat Eccles spotted a gap in the visitors defence and weaved his way through to push MV in front, converting his own try 12-5. Aldwinians were no pushover and their big players were running strong but MV had them contained as they ran out of options when the ball went wide. MV struck again when they broke down the right flank, on breakdown the play swung to the left with James Matthie breaking well down the centre and drawing in the defence before putting Jamie Kingdon away again down the left, the conversion missed 17-5. Aldwinians narrowed the gap with a penalty 17-8. This was a good half’s play from MV and the team were looking good and confident.

The second half proved much as the first with MV showing much more promise in the backs and lots of commitment and tackling up front. James Matthie was again influential in the opening score of the half when he set Gregg Warren off down the right wing to outpace the defence and score for Pat Eccles to convert 24-8. Aldwinians came back with a try out wide left converted to come back to 24-15. MV rounded off a good afternoons work with centre Matt Coxon crashing over close to the posts for Pat Eccles to add an easy conversion 31 – 15. A penalty late on closed the game off for MV at a convinving 34-15 which puts them in 3rd place in the league behind Didsbury and West Park on round one of the league season. Man of the Match for MV was winger James Matthie who had a good game in both attack and defence and set up 2 good tries for MV.

This weekend MV are away to Littleborough in round two. Other results for MV were a heavy 50-0 defeat at De La Salle for the 2nd XV and an encouraging 0-31 away win at Carrington for the 3rd XV. If you are interested in playing rugby for Trafford MV please contact Greg on 07834 857905
