TRAFFORD MV OUT GUNNED AT OLDHAM 41-0
By Wilf Dooley
Oldham made the most of excellent conditions at Manor Park to give Trafford MV a tough afternoon
In glorious autumnal conditions MV travelled to Oldham intent on improving their run of bad form - unfortunately for MV Oldham hadn't read the same script. MV missed a penalty opportunity tom open the scoring and Oldham did the same a minute later. However it was evident from early doors that Oldham were running with more determination and aggression and it was going to be a game where MV had to stand up strong in defence. The fortunes of the 2 sides were determined early on as Oldham crossed the MV line decisively not once, not twice but three times and at 21-0 after 20 minutes thins were looking ominous. MV strived hard to get back in contention but were always on the back foot and defending hard. Things got worse before they got better when a penalty was followed by a pushover 5 metre scrum to secure the bonus point and a half time advantage of 31-0.
MV made 3 changes at half time which brought an improved structure to the side and the better cohesion brought an improved defence and a more probing attack. However the home side struck with an early penalty 34-. MV were a much more competitive outfit in the second half and managed to nullify the home sides attack until the very last minute of the game when after an attack of their own broke down deep in the Oldham half the home side surged the length of the field to eventually score under the posts and seal a deserved victory at 41-0.
MV are searching hard to find answers to their recent poor run and with good training sessions coach Ricky Phillips and captain Andy Quigley will be hoping to turn the corner soon. This defeat saw MV slump to 5th in the ADM Lancashire Premier League and allowed Oldham to climb into 2nd place. This weekend MV host Widnes who are currently placed 7th but have won their last 3 fixtures with an improved run of form. MV are looking for local sportsmen to get in touch and join them for competitive rugby action with their three senior sides. Call Greg on 07834 857905.
