Oldham leave empty handed
By Richard Culver
U14s shut out Oldham, and cut loose scoring 9 tries.
A squad of 18 assembled on a calm, chilly morning, an excellent pitch inviting both sides to play attacking rugby.
With player development at the fron of our minds we lined up
1 Ollie J
2 Charlie H
6 Will C (c)
9 Will R
12 Charlie B
Subs; Ali, Ollie B, Yousuf
A fast start, Will's strong run from the kick off put MV in behind the Oldham defence and Charlie H fed Jacob who outpaced the away team's cover. Charlie B converted and after barely a minute played the score was 7-0.
MV were showing their developing maturity, building the phases, and Ollie J found a gap before putting George over for a second, well converted by Charlie. 14-0.
Oldham had a period of possession, but MV were resolute, Azzanne made the big hit, Will attacked the ball and Cian profited from the turnover with a strong run and finish. Ollie B added a fourth, just before the break, as again the MV team built the phases, made their passes and eventually forced a gap. 24-0 was the score as the team's turned around.
Azzane played for Oldham in the second half, a knock reduced them to 14 fit players. He was excellent, making great tackles and giving Oldham a focal point in attack.
Cian opened the second half scoring, a good finish after a barnstormer of a run from Ethan. Charlie added the extras 31-0.
George nabbed his second following some great link play from Charlie B and Oscar. 36-0
Tom was having a great match, moving into the centres, his tackling was fierce and his strong running was stretching Oldham, Will R made a great break too and MV were unlucky not to add points. Eventually the pressure told, an MV knock on gave Oldham a defensive scrum, but a good nudge drove them off their ball and Ethan drove over from 8. 41-0.
Will C was unlucky not to score, twice he was denied by some good Oldham defense, Oldham won a penalty but the clearing kick missed touch and Jacob from full back scored, showing great agility to avoid touch. Tom added 2, 48-0.
Another big push from MV, with both Yousuf and Eoin prominent in the tackle, forcing an Oldham knock on, Ethan broke and Jack applied a short range finish. 53-0 and the final score.
Overall a positive morning, with all players getting game time, some positional changes and the welcome return of Yousuf.
The man of the match awards went to Azzanne for an excellent match in both teams colours and to Tom who was a threat all day and defended expertly when needed.
