BIG WIN AGAINST THE TIGERS
By Richard Culver
The U14s return to winning ways, running in 8 tries against a spirited Sedgley Park side.
Early plans had to change when Sedgley arrived with just 14 players. MV dropped to a 7 man pack to match the visitors numbers and lined up
1 Ollie J
2 Will C (c)
9 Will R
14 Ollie B
Charlie H and Alastair made up a depleted bench.
From minute one the home side were on it, often slow starters but George made a break, Ethan secured the ball and Will delivered a peach of a pass from the ruck and Ollie B outpaced the Park defence with Jacob in support. Charlie had his kicking boots on and with barely a minute on the clock MV led by 7.
The MV boys had a quiet spell, and whilst Sedgley never threatened they started to feel like they were containing the home team and it was a somewhat fortunate phase of play which allowed Ollie to nab a second try. Jack looked for a chip over, sliced it but Ethan was able to gather and set, the ball moved blind and George produced a good offload sending the MV wing over. Charlie added the extras 14-0.
Azzanne created the 3rd, a powerful run deep into Park territory, and a good pass out of the tackle to Cian who crossed untouched from just outside of the 22. 2 more for Charlie 21-0.
The final points of the half came on the whistle, Jacob applying a close range finish after Cian had made a strong run following a scrum won against the head. Charlie again converted to make the half time score 28-0.
MV started the 2nd half as they had the first, Will C's kick chase was excellent and forced a turnover, Ollie J powering over. Tom added the extras following a half time reshuffle. Cian added a sixth, a cheeky pass from Will after another scrum was stolen, 2 more from Tom, 42-0.
Sedgley were tiring and following a heavy knock to a Park prop the match moved to 13-a-side and uncontested scrums. Azzanne soon found room following a tackle and turnover, running in from over halfway, more points for Charlie.
Sedgley looked to kick behind the MV backs but only found Cian who returned the kick with interest, Charlie again added the extras. 56-0.
A late Sedgley rally, and after some amazing and committed MV defence, Park crossed for a consolation and deserved score. 56-7 was the final score.
A strong performance, although some work needed in the pack, body shapes were poor in the ruck, and the backs need to look to straighten at times as a lot of ball was shipped aimlessly allowing Park to scramble and kill some moves. Tom and Ollie J were denied more scores though, last ditch tackles needed to stop them, and Will C almost scored following a ridiculous solo drive which needed most of the Sedgley forwards to stop him.
Two Player of the Day winners - Will R for a great display at scrum half, quick ball and some great snipes from the base of the scrum. George for his incredible tackle count and link play.
