U14s down 'Dale
By Richard Culver
Sloppy performance but too strong for a determined Rossendale side.
Rossendale could only field 12, so with cup rules enforced MV lined up with 13 starters and a packed bench.
1 Ollie J
2 Charlie H
3 Will C (c)
9 Will R
13 Ollie B
Subs: Ethan, Eoin, Charlie B, Ali, Alistair, Robin
Rossendale started well and MV were disorganised and defending poorly. The forwards were over committing in the rucks, the backs defending too narrowly, and after an MV knock on Rossendale were able to outflank the MV defence and score under the posts. The conversion was good and MV were behind by 7.
Dale continued to press and came close to a second try after a line out following a penalty, a knock on allowing MV to break out.
MV started to get into the game, Will was carrying well, and Will R was finding runners and support, a penalty in the Dale 22 was won following a spell of MV pressure and skipper Will crashed over to get the team back in the game. 5-7 and midway through the half.
3 quick scores followed, and Dale were looking stretched. Ethan's introduction gave the MV pack greater physicality and his break allowed Azzanne to find a gap and he put George over with a lovely pass after fixing the Dale full back. Tom added the extras.
Dan's strong run was rewarded as he fed Jacob for a try, 2 more from Tom. From the kick off Azzanne took the ball forward and Cian streaked in from half way. 26-7.
Yousuf was unlucky not to score and the Dale defence just did enough to keep out Will. 26-7 the half time score.
Another Jacob try at the start of the 2nd half after Ethan had made good ground with a bullocking run.
The game got scrappy for 10 minutes, both sides handling was letting them down, but the MV defence was more resolute and Dale were struggling for position and possession.
Jacob scored a third following a scrum, picking up from the base and attacking the blind side.
Another scrum, this time Will was at 8 and his break was stopped but a smart offload allowed Alistair to attack the line, he was stopped short but Will was in support and he showed great strength to grab his second. 41-7
Rossendale were well beaten but stuck at it and never rolled over, a good break saw them make a rare visit to the MV 22, only an excellent cover tackle from Robin kept them out, and after winning a turnover Cian was able to power in for his second. Will R converted, 48-7 was the final score.
Poor performance but a good win.
Man of the Match performances from Ethan and captain Will.
